About Gary Rubenstein

When he was just five years old, Gary played a Who in his kindergarten's production of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. That was it—he was hooked. Since then, Gary has devoted his life to performing: In plays, doing improv, storytelling, commercials, and TV shows. His credits include Night Court, 9-1-1, 2 Broke Girls, Anger Management, and many others, but he’s best known for his recurring role on the ABC sitcom Suburgatory as Schulman, the twerking accountant.

He was a bit of a sad kid (don’t worry—it got better!) and found escape in magical lands filled with dragons, hidden portals behind great houses, or solving mysteries with the Hardy Boys. These stories helped him through his loneliness, and that’s exactly what he strives to do with his narration: transport people to another place, help them forget their problems, and lift their spirits. But it wasn’t just fiction that helped him. He devoured nonfiction too—biographies, behind-the-scenes books about his favorite movies—and even used a nonfiction book to transform his life. Gary had a severe lisp that no one seemed able to fix until he stumbled upon a book explaining tongue placement and taught himself to overcome it. That is why Fantasy, Cozy Mystery and non-fiction are ideal genres for him to narrate.

Gary has always had a strong narrator in his head, narrating not only the books he reads but also his life. So, why not let that narrator out? His characters are always a bit quirky, charming, and sometimes neurotic. (Okay, many times neurotic. Just ask his husband) People often describe his voice as warm, whimsical, soothing, lighthearted, professional, and friendly—all qualities that make Gary an ideal narrator.
